Ways to enjoy the holidays with your child

The holidays are quickly approaching. It can be an exciting and challenging time for some children. The following tips can help your child adapt to the change in their routine and hopefully make the holidays more enjoyable.

  • Maintain a schedule and daily routine as much as possible.
  • Structure and routine lessens uncertainty and helps children manage their daily activities. There will be days when you are away and can’t keep a regular schedule. When you are home, stick to the routine.
  • Photos, pictures, social stories, or marking events on a calendar can be helpful to prepare your child for holiday activities. Talking about what to expect before the event can help reduce stress. Use photos, pictures, social stories, or the calendar to discuss what you will do, where/when you will go, and/or who you will see.
  • Know your child’s limits and try to keep the holidays as low key as possible. Too many guests, goodies, games, presents, and decorations can be overwhelming. Make a plan and be prepared.
  • Determine a place for your child to relax or calm and bring items that comfort your child (stuffed animals, books, chew tools, etc) if you are away from home.
  • Plan ways to involve your child in holiday activities. Encourage your child do one thing for the holiday that makes them feel proud. Consider age appropriate activities such as, drawing a picture or completing an art project, fold napkins or set the table, make or decorate cookies. Involving your child can create positive feelings and memories.

Remember to take care of yourself. Children can sense and feel our stress. If you remain calm you will be able to support your child during their difficult moments.
We wish you the best this holiday season!
